PrEP

What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication for individuals who are HIV-negative, providing effective protection against HIV. Its effectiveness increases when used alongside condoms and other prevention methods. An Ohio program makes PrEP free for most Ohioans.

These antiviral drugs are called Truvada and Descovy (pills) and Apretude (injection).

PrEP is safe to use, though some people may experience side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, or stomach pain. These side effects are typically temporary and improve over time. If you have side effects that are severe or persist, be sure to discuss them with your healthcare provider.

PrEP reduces the chance of getting HIV but doesn't prevent other STIs or pregnancy. Condoms can help prevent certain other STIs and pregnancy.

Tips for Taking PrEP

  • You can take PrEP at any time of the day, with or without food.
  • For maximum effectiveness, take PrEP at the same time each day.
  • Consider pairing it with a daily routine, such as eating breakfast or brushing your teeth at night.
  • Keep your pill bottle in a visible spot to help you remember.
  • Use daily reminders on your phone or watch to stay on track.
